20 Chic Alternatives To Builder-Grade Closet Doors
By JESSICA DANIELS
Reuse
With some carpentry skills and tools, you can refit and refinish an old door from another room or a previous renovation to replace your current builder-grade closet doors.
Elevate
Remove the center slats of your bifold doors, sand and paint the frames, add trim to the inside panels, staple on gold mesh or rolled cane, and add bold handles.
Convert
Either replace your existing bifold doors with chic French doors or convert them by removing the center hinges on a single bifold and reinstalling them onto the doorframe.
Alternatively, leave the bifold on its track, remove a single door’s hinges or glue a double door’s seam shut, secure it with L-brackets, and add a pivot bracket and strike plate.
Repurpose
Turn a coat closet near an entryway into a mini mudroom or hall tree by removing its door and hinges and adding a shoe storage bench, decorative hooks, and open shelves.
Swap
Replace pantry bifold doors with swinging doors by installing double-action hinges and stability hardware. Use pivot brackets if the space needs three or more swinging doors.
