5 Signs Your HVAC System Is Making
You Ill
By EMILY HOPKINS
Presence Of Moisture
Your indoor humidity levels help you live comfortably while free from health hazards. The evaporator coil condenses warm air to control the humidity level which should range between 30% and 45% during summer but under 40% in the winter.
Contaminants
Molds, dust, and other allergens accumulate in your air vents that are then spread across your entire house, so failure to maintain your ducts can be detrimental to your health. A clogged airway could mean higher energy bills as your HVAC has to work through debris.
Refrigerant Leakage
Refrigerant (or freon) is an odorless substance that absorbs heat within your house. Exposure to refrigerant can cause nausea, headaches, and even organ failure or death, and freon is a greenhouse gas, so watch out for hissing sounds or ice on the evaporator coils.
Recycling Stale Air
Your HVAC system circulates air in and out of the house, so opening your windows or doors isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Without having them open, stale, pollutant-laden air is recycled which can cause illness, and be sure to regularly clean your air filters.
Indoor Air Quality
As your HVAC system is a unit, all its parts need to be maintained, and failure to clean your air ducts can attract rodents. In addition to making noise and destroying your house’s structure, these pests can spread lethal diseases and bacteria throughout your house.
