A Better Alternative
To Using Aluminum Foil To Sharpen Pruning Shears
By PAIGE MATHIEU
Aluminum foil helps remove rust and buildup from pruning shears, but it doesn't actually hone their edges, and sharp blades are vital for making clean, precise cuts in your garden.
A better alternative is to use a metal file to properly sharpen the cutting edges of your pruning shears. It's crucial to wear gloves to protect your hands during this process.
Start by cleaning dirt and debris off your shears using sandpaper. Next, use a ball of aluminum foil to get into the remaining nooks and crannies and to eliminate any rust.
Use the file to sharpen the blades, then smooth out any rough edges with sandpaper. Afterward, mix 1 part bleach with 10 parts water and use the solution to sanitize
the shears.
Finally, apply WD-40 to lubricate your shears, and they'll work better than ever. This method also works for loppers and hedge shears, breathing new life into your gardening tools.
