Accelerate Decomposition Of Your Compost Pile With This Kitchen Staple
By ANNETTE HIRD
Making your own compost has a lot of benefits. Adding yeast to the pile will help speed up the composting process, resulting in nutrient-dense soil for your garden in less time.
The yeast in your cabinet is most likely baker’s yeast, which is made of a single-celled fungus. It needs a warm environment in order to survive, but it’ll die if it gets too hot.
As a fungus, it can break down the organic materials that bacteria can’t, like fibrous or acidic food scraps. Then, the bacteria will take over, decomposing the rest of the pile.
When that happens, the pile heats up until the yeast can’t survive. As such, the yeast should be sprinkled over your kitchen scraps when you first add them to your compost pile.
