Add A Pop Of Color To Your Garden With This Easy-To-Grow Flower
By DANIELLE RAMOS-SULLIVAN
If you're looking for a new plant to add to your container garden, Mexican heather is a charming and low-maintenance choice that can add color and vibrancy to any space.
Native to Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, this tropical shrub is known for its tiny, star-shaped flowers that grow in clusters along the stems and bloom from spring to fall.
While the most common flower color is purple, there are also white and pink blooms. These flowers attract a variety of pollinators including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
This plant is highly resilient and, while it prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil and plenty of partial sunlight, it can tolerate some shade and periods of drought.
Water it once a week when the top inch of soil feels dry and more frequently during hot and dry periods. Add mulch to the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Mexican heather is relatively pest-free but can occasionally harbor spider mites or free beetles, which can be easily repelled with a spray of water or neem oil.
It’s a great choice for container gardens, as its compact size and adaptability make it ideal for patios, balconies, and windowsills. Also, use it in hanging baskets.
