Attract Hummingbirds & More To Your Yard With This DIY Pollinator Pot
By KATE NICHOLSON
If you don’t have space for a pollinator garden but still want to attract the beneficial critters, this easy DIY is for you. All you need is a pot and some nectar-rich flowers.
The flowers you’ll want to include in your pot will depend on your region. In general, salvias, daisies, and milkweed are easy to grow in most conditions and suit containers well.
If you are combining different species in your pot, make sure your chosen plants bloom at different times of the year or have contrasting growth habits, such as vine versus shrub.
You should also make sure they have similar preferences for sunlight and soil. Alternatively, you can place the plants in separate pots and group them together for visual effect.
When you’re ready to plant, use glazed ceramic or resin planters at least 16 inches deep with several drainage holes. Mix and match the container sizes to maximize your space.
For the soil, a standard container mix paired with a slow-release fertilizer should do the trick. Avoid using pesticides and apply mulch or bring the pot inside during the winter.
