Avoid Painting These Common Household Items At All Costs
By SAKSHI KHAITAN
Tiles
Painting over your outdated tiles is, at best, a temporary fix. The task is labor-intensive and the paint will mostly peel over time, especially in high-traffic or wet areas.
Alternatively, contact a professional and get them to paint your tiles instead, use peel-and-stick vinyl flooring, or invest in new tiles and replace the existing ones.
Cookware
Refrain from painting any item you use to prepare food as the chemicals in paint can leak into your food and can cause health issues.
Water-based paints in small amounts may cause skin and mouth irritation, while larger quantities can lead to severe issues. Solvents in oil-based paints can cause poisoning.
Historical Woodwork
Although painting the historical woodwork in your house will give your interiors a lift, this modernization can cost you your home’s historical significance.
If your woodwork is in good condition and the details on it are breathtaking, salvage it with a high-quality stain. However, if it’s rundown, it might benefit from a fresh coat.
Wood Floors
Painting your hardwood floors involves extensive prep, like sanding, filling cracks and gaps, fixing scratches, sealing the wood, and obtaining suitable paint.
You’ll need to consider the type of wood, its current stain, the underflooring, and any imperfections. So, it’s best to get a professional to refinish your wooden flooring.
Door Knobs & Hinges
After drying, paint becomes hard and can hamper your hardware’s ability to function well. For instance, a painted hinge won’t rotate as smoothly.
To touch up the hardware yourself, remove them from the doors, clean and spray paint the doorknobs and hinges. Let them dry for around 24 hours before putting them back.
