Banish Smelly Mattress Odors With These Steam-Cleaning Tips
By EZEKIEL MAINA
Accumulation of sweat, bacteria, allergens, body oils, and mold can cause your mattress to smell. Fortunately, you can use a steam cleaner to kill bacteria and break down stains.
To transform your smelly mattress, you’ll need a steam cleaner (or even a garment steamer or steam iron), white vinegar, baking soda, a vacuum cleaner, and a cloth.
Start by removing all the linens, pillows, and mattress toppers. Then, place the mattress in a well-ventilated area and vacuum the mattress using the upholstery attachment.
Next, blot the stains with a cloth doused in white vinegar followed by the application of baking soda to deodorize. Lastly, vacuum your mattress before steam cleaning.
For stubborn odors, let the baking soda sit for up to 24 hours and mix it with a few drops of any essential oil. Once done, leave your mattress in a well-ventilated space.
Note that steam cleaning can damage certain mattresses such as memory foam and latex. Make sure to follow the care instructions diligently to avoid voiding the warranty.
