This darkly hued variation of the sunny classic can grow up to 6 feet tall. Sow the seeds directly into well-draining soil after the last frost for best results.
Plant them at least 2 feet apart to give them room to spread out. The mature plants will draw pollinators into your yard, and they hold up well as cut flowers for display.
Several black petunia varieties exist, including Black Mamba and Black Cat. All of them prefer full sun and well-draining soil, and they flourish in container gardens.
Follow the instructions on the back of the seed packet when planting. Many gardeners start them inside and transplant them after the last frost because they take a while to mature.
This dramatic flower has been beloved since 1629. You can sow the seeds inside in late winter and then transplant them, or plant them outside after the first frost.
Place them in an area with full sun and some shelter, such as a trellis, to protect them from wind. After they fade, remove their flower spikes to collect seeds for next season.
