Cowley explained that Carex also offers habitat and food for pollinators and other beneficial insects, which will ultimately contribute to local biodiversity.

While Carex pensylvanica thrives in the eastern and central U.S., Carex texensis suits the heat and humidity in the South, and Carex tumulicola is best for the dry and moist West.

You can choose Carex with variegated leaves — a year-round evergreen mix of green and white. Certain types of Carex even have bronze leaves that come in a light brown shade.
