Carex Lawns: Why Landscaping Experts Love This Grass Alternative
By V BAWA
Carex is a bladed plant that thrives with less water, mowing, and fertilization than normal lawn grass, making it a great eco-friendly grass alternative, per landscaping experts.
Best known for their narrow, green leaves, Carex species can create a lush, carpet-like appearance and tolerate foot traffic.
Per landscape expert Lina Cowley, "Many Carex species are drought tolerant, which helps conserve water and makes them well-suited for regions that experience water scarcity."
Additionally, Carex also offers ecological benefits. Its dense root systems are useful for soil erosion control, and the species enhances the diversity of a region's ecosystem.
Cowley explained that Carex also offers habitat and food for pollinators and other beneficial insects, which will ultimately contribute to local biodiversity.
Carex species are adaptable and can grow in a wide range of soils and conditions. Some varieties have their preferences, so consider your region before choosing a variety.
While Carex pensylvanica thrives in the eastern and central U.S., Carex texensis suits the heat and humidity in the South, and Carex tumulicola is best for the dry and moist West.
You can choose Carex with variegated leaves — a year-round evergreen mix of green and white. Certain types of Carex even have bronze leaves that come in a light brown shade.
