Create A Container Garden Buffet For Hummingbirds To Enjoy
By BROOKE YOUNGER
While feeders offer a consistent food source, flowers provide essential nutrients and a higher caloric payoff, making a container garden a superior choice for attracting hummers.
Jewelweed is an ideal choice for such a container garden, with its bright orange and red tubular flowers perfectly shaped for hummingbirds to access nectar with their
long beaks.
Moreover, its nectar has a sugar content of around 43% — much higher than the 20% to 23% found in other flowers — making the plant especially appealing to these vibrant birds.
Jewelweed thrives in moist, partially shaded areas and is well-suited for USDA zones 2 to 9. It can tolerate soggy soil, making it a great option for planters with poor drainage.
Although jewelweed is considered invasive in some states, container gardening is an effective way to prevent this fast-growing, competitive plant from spreading uncontrollably.
