This hack by TikTok’s @therehablife shows you how to install a useful floating shelf with a bonus — a secret compartment to store small items you’d prefer to keep out of sight.
All you'll need is a miter saw, a screwdriver, screws, a respirator mask, wood filler, wood stain, polyurethane, some hinges, a 1-by-8 board, a 1-by-6 board, and a 2-by-4 board.
Measure your planks according to the size you want your shelf to be, then cut three long planks out of the 1-by-8 board and two short side planks out of the 1-by-6 board.
First, screw the two short 1-by-6 side planks to the ends of one 1-by-8 plank. Then, attach another 1-by-8 plank with two hinges to create the secret compartment’s door.
Next, screw the third 1-by-8 plank to the top of the compartment, which will become the shelf. Finally, screw the 2-by-4 plank to your wall and screw your wooden box onto it.
Finish the shelf by closing up screw holes with wood filler, sanding, staining, and varnishing it. You can also add a handle if you don’t mind revealing the secret compartment.
