Do This With Your Camellias To Produce Gorgeous Blooms Every Time

Caring for your camellias the right way can make them pop with color and energy. Knowing when to fertilize these plants and what type of product to use can help these blooms shine.
Originally from eastern and southern Asia, camellias are pretty resilient but do have their preferences. The soil’s pH should be between 6.0 and 6.5 to best cater to their needs.
To maintain them, first pluck off any blooms that are past their prime, and scoop up any petals at the plant’s base to avoid camellia blight and allow the plant to focus on growth.
Choose fertilizer based on the balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which is noted by the numbers on the package (for example, 4-8-8 or 10-10-10).
To enhance the blooms of established plants, use a lower nitrogen mix, such as 4-8-8. For younger, still growing plants, opt for a mix with more nitrogen, like 12-4-8 or 10-10-10.
Avoid adding too much nitrogen, which can invite insect problems, or too much phosphorus, which can interfere with the plants’ ability to soak up other essential nutrients.
Timing also matters, so avoid using fertilizer before a storm or during the harsh midday sun. Aim for a second, midsummer application for plants that seem weary and less vibrant.
Avoid using fertilizer too close to winter, as it can encourage new growth that can’t handle the cold. Try to finish your fertilizing routine 60 days before the first frost.
