Does Adding Hot Water Make It Okay
To Dump Grease Down The Drain?
By BROOKE YOUNGER
Many people believe that adding hot water helps grease dissolve and flow smoothly through pipes, making it safe to pour the mixture down the drain or into the garbage disposal.
In reality, even near-boiling water doesn't prevent grease from congealing. In fact, it may push the grease deeper into the plumbing before the water cools down and
drains out.
The grease solidifies and sticks to the pipes, trapping other food particles and eventually forming clogs. Over time, this can lead to a potential overflow back into the sink.
Oil is actually hydrophobic and doesn't mix well with water, regardless of the temperature. Hence, it's best to avoid this practice, as it can lead to severe
plumbing issues.
