Don't Make This Safety Mistake When Using Bar Keepers Friend
By CHRISTY RAE AMMONS
When a cleaning solution is as powerful as Bar Keepers Friend, it’s likely to come with some risks, so it’s important to protect yourself from the effects of its harsh ingredients.
The main cleaning agent in Bar Keepers Friend is oxalic acid, which is corrosive and can burn your skin and eyes on contact and irritate your nose, throat, and lungs if inhaled.
The surfactant in it, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, is also an irritant, so it’s essential to follow the usage instructions carefully and to take the proper safety measures.
To prevent Bar Keepers Friend from coming into contact with your bare skin while using it, always wear a pair of latex or rubber gloves, and wash your hands thoroughly afterward.
Preferably, wear a face mask or respirator to avoid inhaling the powder when applying it and goggles to stop it from accidentally splashing into your eyes during scrubbing.
