Stylist, author, and HGTV star Emily Henderson is known for frequently providing design advice on how to efficiently design a small space. In a recent Instagram live chat, Henderson shared tips for arranging furniture, as well as which popular design trends can actually harm the overall look of your space.
Henderson says to avoid choosing too many furniture pieces, as it can make the room not only feel smaller, but also a bit chaotic. Focus on pieces with more than one function, like an ottoman with storage, and sideboards with cabinets.
Even though it’s trendy, Henderson is not a fan of focal rooms, because while a focal room draws your eye to something beautiful, it can actually make a space feel smaller by dividing the room. Additionally, Henderson believes that darker colors will make a space feel smaller, so avoid contrasts and stick to light colors.
