Fixer Upper's Joanna Gaines Loves This Shiplap Alternative
By BROOKE YOUNGER
Joanna Gaines, the former co-host of "Fixer Upper," helped popularize the shiplap wall trend, but now she has created an updated alternative look, coined "skinnylap."
Skinnylap follows a similar slatted board design to shiplap — a wall design made by stacking interlocking planks — but the individual slats are about half the width.
Like shiplap, skinnylap is made of wood, can be installed vertically or horizontally, and is easily paintable or stainable. Its planks are typically only about 1 or 2 inches wide.
Gaines prefers to use skinnylap on feature walls and around certain features like large windows, stairwells, and fireplaces rather than cover the whole room.
When installed vertically, this modern wall material brings a unique texture and height to the room. Skinnylap requires more planks, so it does cost more than traditional shiplap.
