Add a coffee filter to the bottom of the planter to help regulate your water, keep your soil moist, and prevent dirt from spilling out of the drainage hole.
Dampen the filters before lining the pot to help them stay in place once dirt is added. They are biodegradable, so you will need to replace them every six to eight months.
Keep your planters nice and light by using pinecones as filler. Line the bottom ⅓ of the container, then pour enough soil on top so that the roots have room to grow.
