Give Your Garden A Whimsical, Mossy Touch With An Unexpected Ingredient
By Peg Aloi
When moss starts to take over a stone statue or a brick walkway, the moss imparts a sort of magical, fairy tale quality to the garden.
Using two very simple ingredients — moss and plain yogurt — you can create one-of-a-kind garden decor pieces that will create a magical, mossy look that will keep for years.
Start with choosing the objects you want to cover with moss. This technique works best on items made of porous, natural materials, such as stone, wood, and brick.
Place chopped pieces of fresh moss into a blender with some yogurt. Then, using a paintbrush, paint it onto the surface of the chosen object.
Most common backyard or forest mosses like plenty of shade and dampness, so it will be important to keep the surface moist after applying the moss slurry.
Once your moss mixture has grown, find a suitable place for the item in the garden, like moss-covered stone planters or statues in shady woodland areas.
