Purple Coneflowers
The seeds on the cone-shaped heads of Echinacea purpurea are a goldfinch favorite. Part of the daisy family, these perennial wildflowers thrive in USDA zones 3-9.
Finches feast on the seeds of yellow, orange, red, and maroon Helianthus annuus flowers. Plant them in a sunny area that shelters them from being blown over by the wind.
Zinnia elegans’ blooms range from purple and yellow to orange and pink. Since they’re annuals and goldfinches love to gobble up their seeds, they’ll need to be replanted.
The most common aster varieties offer abundant pink, purple, red, and white flowers filled with seeds that attract goldfinches. They only tolerate full sun in cooler areas.
Hardy in zones 3-9, Papaver spp. produces red, orange, purple, and pink blooms in late spring to early summer, and the seeds that goldfinches eat appear later in the season.
