Grow These Houseplants In Glass Jars For
A Mini Indoor Container Garden
By MADISEN SWENSON
Basil
Place a stem from a grocery store basil plant (Ocimum basilicum) in a jar and add potting soil. Don’t add multiple stems since this will overcrowd the jar and kill the plant.
Thyme
For a constant supply of fresh herbs, grow a thyme plant in a jar. Thymus vulgaris is a low-maintenance, compact herb that grows well in a container in either soil or water.
Green Onions
To propagate Allium cepa, cut down the onion stalks to the thick white part, place them upright in a jar with shallow water, and watch new green stocks eventually grow.
Peppers
Petite varieties of small-fruited peppers (Capsicum annuum) thrive in a jar. Save the seeds from your store-bought mini sweet peppers to start a reseeding container plant.
Strawberries
Strawberries, especially dwarf varieties like Alpine strawberries (Fragaria vesca), do well in a wide-mouthed jar. You can transfer it to a larger pot once established.
