Here's How To Properly Water Your Peace Lilies
By CHRISTY RAE AMMONS
Although peace lilies are known for being easy to care for, these tropical plants could begin to wither if the soil isn’t kept moist through a proper method of watering.
Use a moisture meter or press your finger an inch into the soil. If it feels dry, slowly pour room-temperature water into the dirt until water trickles from the pot’s bottom.
An alternative watering method is to place the plant’s pot into a container filled with a few inches of water for at least 10 minutes before checking the soil’s moisture.
Let your peace lily drain and check the drainage dish for standing water. If you use this method, occasionally water the plant on the top to avoid salt buildup in the soil.
Various factors influence the amount of water your plant will need, such as sunlight exposure and how well your home is ventilated.
The pot housing your peace lily also contributes to how much water it needs; ceramic and plastic pots hold more water while clay pots dry the soil out faster.
As different areas vary in the amount of chemicals, such as fluoride and chlorine, used in tap water, consider using distilled, filtered, or even rainwater for your plant.
If tap is your only option, allow the water to sit on the counter for several hours to help reduce some of the chemicals. Avoid using softened water as it has higher sodium levels.
