Here's What Could Be Making Your Laminate Floors Extra Slick
By KYLE SCHURMAN
Laminate floors are affordable and durable. They have a smooth finish that makes them easy to clean, but that coating can also be a drawback because it can easily become slick.
A thick layer of dust or sand could be making your laminate floors slippery, as the smooth surface provides no texture for traction. It’s best to sweep, mop, or vacuum regularly.
Moisture can be another cause of slickness, so wipe up spills right away. Not only can spilled liquid cause you to slip, but it can seep into and damage the laminate flooring.
Some types of laminate flooring will sweat, especially in high-humidity environments. To address the problem, use fans and dehumidifiers in the area to remove moisture from the air.
Beyond cleaning, you can also add mats and rugs, which can reduce dust and debris tracking into your home and catch spills, thereby preventing slippery floors.
You can also add a coating to counteract some of the natural slickness of this material. Lowe’s sells a gallon for $189 — just be sure to clean your floors before applying it.
