HGTV Trends That Are Outdated, According To
A Real Estate Agent
By JULIANA LUMAJ
In a House Digest exclusive interview, real estate agent Josh Steppling shared which design trends are outdated in an effort to help you make informed design-related decisions.
Homeowners are moving away from faux materials in favor of natural ones. Instead of granite, builders are opting for “the raw beauty of more basic alternatives,” noted Steppling.
White and sterile kitchens are falling out of favor. Steppling said, “The new trends are bringing personality to a space and using materials that might represent the homeowner.”
The realtor noted stainless steel appliances “look very commercial,” so the “owners are choosing something more neutral that doesn't make itself the focal point of the space.”
Shiplap is another outdated trend. “Homebuyers know that it's a veneer and unless you're in an actual rural building, it can come off as unpleasant,” explained Steppling.
According to Steppling, even open floor plans are losing popularity because “homeowners prefer spaces that are segmented to their individual uses rather than completely open.”
