How HGTV's David Bromstad Lightens Dark Wooden Cabinets

Many old houses feature darker wood, making it difficult to achieve the light and airy interior aesthetic that can make rooms feel more open and spacious.
According to HGTV’s David Bromstad, the kitchen in an old home will most likely need updating. However, replacing dark cabinets can cost an average of $2,000 to $10,500.
Bromstad offers smart advice on “My Lottery Dream Home” to clients who want a white kitchen without paying the hefty cost: “I would strip all that down and bleach it.”
The American designer continued, “[I]t will come out almost white. And you’ll have a natural look that’s casual, and you’ll see the wood grain, and it’s absolutely stunning.”
To bleach the cabinets, lay out a protective tarp and remove the doors. Afterward, remove any hardware, such as hinges and knobs, and sand the doors to remove any paint.
Apply the bleach with a paintbrush and let it sit for the product’s suggested time before wiping it off. Repeat this step until you achieve your desired color.
