How To
Easily Remove Popcorn Ceiling
By GLADIS G.
Asbestos Test
Before anything else, you will need to check your ceiling for asbestos by getting an asbestos test kit from a hardware store or hiring an asbestos testing company. If the test comes back positive for asbestos, it’s best to hire a professional for the removal.
Tools and Gear
The tools you will need for this project are a garden sprayer, drywall knife, plastic sheeting, painter's tape, a ladder, sandpaper, primer, and paint. To protect your eyes, nose, and mouth from flying particles and debris, you will also need safety goggles and masks designed for home projects.
Prep
Cover your walls, floors, and furniture with plastic sheeting and secure it with painter’s tape, and if there’s furniture that can be moved, it’s best to take them out of the room. Remove any light fixtures or ceiling fans or make sure the power is off completely before starting.
Scrape
To begin removing the popcorn texture, fill the garden sprayer with water and spray small sections at a time. After the surface has been moistened for 15 to 20 minutes, slowly scrape with a metal scraper while making sure you aren’t being so forceful that you’re damaging the drywall.
Paint
Once the popcorn texture has been removed, it’s time to sand and prime the ceiling in preparation for painting. Use 150-grit sandpaper for a smooth finish, identify any areas that will need to be filled with drywall mud before sanding, and use paint that is specifically for ceilings and not walls.
