Since sunlight is crucial to the poppies’ blooming process and provides a way to remove excess water, you should plant them in a place with as little shade as possible.

Choose a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sun each day. To do so, study the amount of sunlight each area of your property gets in the morning, at noon, and in the evening.

If your area gets a lot of rain, plant your poppies in raised garden beds, which offer better drainage and keep excess water away from their root systems.

Once you have a spot, plant the poppy seeds 1 to 2 feet apart and 1/8 inch under the topsoil. Use a fertilized topsoil that’s full of nutrients and drains well.

Keep the poppy seeds moist until they successfully germinate. Once the plants form, be sure to thoroughly water them once a week, and watch your garden bloom.
