If you're looking to plant tulip trees to draw hummingbirds, you'll be pleased to know that they're not only beautiful but also relatively easy to grow under the right conditions.
Tulip trees thrive in USDA zones 4 to 9, except in dry, arid regions, and prefer organically rich, slightly acidic, well-draining soil. They can't handle high salt content, though.
They require full sun but can endure some shade in home gardens. Also, tulip trees are prone to drought due to their shallow roots, which can be managed with supplemental watering.
For optimal growth, plant their balled and burlapped rootstock in the spring, or transplant the tree from nursery containers at any time of the year, especially in southern states.
If you have a smaller yard, consider dwarf varieties like Compactum and Ardis, or prune slower-growing variegated types like Aureomarginatum into shrubs every two to three years.
