How To Protect Your Hosta Plants During An Extreme Heat Wave
By TRICIA GOSS
Hydration is your hostas’ first line of protection against hot weather. Deep watering ensures optimal root moisture and promotes healthy plant growth.
Ensure you consistently monitor soil moisture levels to prevent overwatering or underwatering. Adjust watering times to the early morning on days with extreme heat.
Mulching also prevents heat stress for plants. Organic materials like wood chips or shredded leaves act as a barrier, retaining soil moisture and stabilizing soil temperature.
Another option for protecting hostas from the sun’s harsh rays is using shade cloth. Place it over the plants in strategic locations, especially during peak hours of sunlight.
Remember that different hosta types may have varying levels of heat tolerance, so paying attention to each plant’s unique requirements is essential.
