Hummingbirds Go Nuts For This Bright Flowering Native Plant
By AMANDA FINN
Watching hummingbirds flying around your yard can be one of life’s simple pleasures, and to keep these pollinators coming back, your garden needs red yuccas.
Since red yuccas thrive in desert climates, they may do better in hotter parts of the country. However, they do not have an invasive nature and won't take over your garden.
It isn't just the plentiful nectar of these flowers that’ll keep hummingbirds coming back — their reddish hue makes them a perfect spot for hummingbirds, which love the color red.
Hummingbirds associate red with food. Since nectar-loving insects cannot see red very well, it indicates to the hummingbirds that red flowers are more likely to have more nectar.
While being red will not make or break a hummingbird's choice to enjoy a feeder or flower, it helps because it's easier for them to see, so keep this color in mind to attract them.
Red yuccas are also trumpet-shaped, which is ideal for a hummingbird's long beak. Almost as if they were made for each other.
