Hummingbirds Will Flock To Your Yard For This Colorful Flower
By SAKSHI KHAITAN
Planting cardinal flowers can transform your garden into a hummingbird hotspot. Their red tubelike blooms are the perfect size for hummers’ beaks to drink the nectar lying within.
These American natives bloom through the summer and the fall, coinciding nicely with the hummingbirds’ fall migration. In turn, the birds wipe out any insects bothering the plant.
Cardinal flowers thrive only in moist soils, so they're best planted as edgings around water like ponds. They tolerate full sun in wet soil but prefer shade in hotter climates.
Be sure to keep pets away, as cardinals can be poisonous when consumed in large quantities. Lastly, hummers prefer a buffet, so interplant several flowers that they love.
