Important Steps To Take If You Find A Bird's Egg In Your Yard Or Garden
By CHRISTY RAE AMMONS
If feathered friends frequent your home, you might discover a wild bird egg in your grass one day. While you may want to pick it up, the best thing you can do is leave it alone.
Although it’s a myth that tampering with an egg will lead the parents to abandon it, you should still avoid touching it. Incubating a migratory bird egg yourself could be illegal.
Moving the egg could also jostle the unhatched bird and cause it harm. Plus, if you return it to the wrong nest, the parents might abandon it and any other eggs they had there.
Furthermore, some birds make nests on the ground, so the egg might be perfectly safe where you found it. If you’re concerned, contact a wildlife rehabilitation center for advice.
