While fall is the optimal time to plant spring-flowering bulbs, all is not lost if you miss this window. With the right planning and care, you can grow your hyacinths in spring.
Hyacinth bulbs prefer at least 10 weeks of cold to sprout, but as long as you get the bulbs in the ground anywhere from one to three months before the last frost, they should bloom.
Spring-planted bulbs lack time to build root systems, so they need extra care. Space them 4 to 6 inches apart, and plant in moist, organic soil to help them establish strong roots.
Choose large bulbs packed with nutrients, and ensure the root ends face downward when planting. Gently apply mulch without using a rake to help protect the young bulbs further.
