Is There A Best Time Of Day To Water Your Lawn?
BY TIM MCKEOUGH
Choosing the best time to water your lawn is important as it can help cultivate lush grass, eliminate pesky molds and fungi, and cut back on water waste.
In general, it’s best to water your lawn from 6:00 to 10:00 in the morning, particularly in the summer, to ensure that too much water isn’t wasted through evaporation.
Moreover, watering early gives the grass blades time to dry out. Since the blades hold moisture, being too wet for too long can allow fungi, mildew, and pests to thrive.
If you can’t water your lawn before 10:00 a.m., the next best timeframe is from 4:00 to 6:00 in the afternoon, when the sun isn’t as intense and the blades still have time to dry.
Generally, it’s best to water your lawn a few times per week. Clayey soils dry out slower, so once a week is best, while sandy turf can be watered up to three times a week.
For freshly planted grass, you should water your lawn every day to keep the first 2 inches of soil moist and promote root growth. You can lower the frequency during wet seasons.
