Keep These Tips In Mind When Cleaning Your Down Comforter
By JENNY TINDER
Cleaning a down comforter may present a significant challenge; before doing so, be sure to check the label to see if it can be washed at home, as some can only be dry cleaned.
If washing it is an option, consider the size of your washing machine, which should be large enough to accommodate your comforter with some additional airspace.
Opt for a gentle detergent — one formulated for down products is best. Use a gentle wash cycle setting with warm water, then run a second rinse cycle to get out residual detergent.
To dry your comforter, use a large dryer on a low-heat setting and check it every 30 minutes or so. The drying process can take several hours, so patience is key.
You can still spruce up "dry clean only" down comforters using a homemade dry cleaning solution of 1 cup of warm water, 1 teaspoon of borax, and 1 teaspoon of oxygen bleach.
Soak a clean washcloth with this solution, then place both the dampened washcloth and down comforter inside your dryer and set it to run for about 30 minutes.
To spot-clean a single area, gently blot the stained area with a clean, white cloth. Then, dab a mild cleaning solution on with another cloth, rinse the area, and blot it dry.
