Look For These Ingredients When Fertilizing Your Lawn
By SAKSHI KHAITAN
When choosing a lawn fertilizer, it's crucial to ensure it has the following nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, as well as trace elements like iron, manganese, and zinc.
Nitrogen (N) is the most important nutrient, responsible for the green color, density, and vertical growth of the grass. Its effect on your lawn can last from four to eight weeks.
Phosphorus (P) plays an essential role in promoting root and flower growth, while potassium (K) enhances plant metabolism and regulates water transport.
Pay attention to the NPK ratio on the fertilizer bag, which denotes the respective quantities of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Select one that suits the needs of your lawn.
For denser grasses, an ideal ratio is either 3:1:2 or 4:1:2, with a higher concentration of nitrogen and potassium, while flowering plants prefer a slow-release 3:5:4 fertilizer.
In contrast, food plants do best with a balanced 10:10:10 fertilizer. For plants in shaded areas, reduce the dosage to support their growth.
