Love It Or List It Tells Us When It's Time To Ditch Old Carpet

Once considered luxurious, carpeting is now often rejected in favor of wood flooring. Hilary Farr of “Love It or List It” agrees with the trend due to the short shelf life it has.
In Season 17, Episode 9 of the show, the homeowners thought their carpet looked in great shape after 20 years; however, HGTV star and designer Farr found it “disgusting.”
With regular cleaning, carpeting can last 10 years at most. Beyond that, it starts to deteriorate and accumulate embedded debris, dead skin, and pet hair — and it smells dingy.
“[T]he floors and design you choose sets the stage for and are the linchpin of a great design,” Farr explained. However, dirty, dingy carpets negatively impact a home’s appeal.
As carpeting is expensive, homeowners try to extend its life, but obvious wear like bald spots, color fading, permanent stains, or walkway matting means it's time to upgrade.
Another sign that your carpet has reached its limit is a persistent odor even after shampooing. This suggests dirt has permeated the carpet pad or subfloor and can’t be removed.
If your family experiences increased allergy symptoms, like constant coughing or sneezing, dander or dust may have embedded in the carpet fibers, and your carpet needs replacing.
