According to Noel Gillis, founder and owner of Home Mechanics, gutters can inadvertently raise indoor humidity when downspouts face toward the building rather than away from it.
Downspouts too close to the foundation can also cause problems. "When downspouts discharge water near the foundation, it can lead to pooling around the base," Gillis explained.
This pooled water can seep into the foundation, basement, or crawl spaces. As this water evaporates, it raises indoor humidity, leading to mold, mildew, and structural issues.
To prevent this, he advises ensuring downspouts discharge water at least 6 feet away from the foundation, which can be "done by installing downspout extenders or splash blocks."
Additionally, Gillis recommends maintaining a slope in the ground around your home to help direct water away naturally, further reducing the risk of humidity-related problems.
