HGTV's Mina Starsiak advises to place the sofa first to create the ideal living room. The main design choices are driven by this piece, which is usually
the biggest in the room.
Doing this creates a cozy conversation nook. Chairs can then be positioned parallel, immediately across from, or slightly tilted toward, the sofa.
Coffee tables should be placed between the sofa and chairs so that it’s reachable from both seats. This also allows for free movement between seats and around the room.
If your coffee table has to be closer to the sofa to achieve this, add a small side table between the chairs so people can still walk around or through the seating area freely.
