Nate Berkus Explains The Most Common Living Room Furniture Mistakes
By CHRISTY RAE AMMONS
Nate Berkus, interior designer and co-host of HGTV’s “The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project,” says to avoid small furniture in your living room, no matter the square footage.
Berkus told Martha Stewart that, with small furniture in a small space, “you really end up with nowhere comfortable to sit.” Plus, it can make your space
feel cramped.
To avoid this, Berkus suggests focusing on making a cozy place to relax by investing in a few larger pieces of furniture rather than a bunch of smaller pieces.
By ditching the small-scale sofa, armchairs, and tables, you'll be able to make your living room as functional as it is comfortable and avoid overcrowding your space.
For small living rooms, Berkus likes to add furniture that can double as storage, which is a great way to cut down on clutter while maintaining the aesthetic of the room.
Berkus also suggests filling wall space with tall mirrors or decorations so the room seems bigger. “Something long and tall in a small space really [draws] your eye up,” he says.
