Plant This Stunning Tree And Watch Hummingbird Flock To Your Yard
By KATE NICHOLSON
Trees may not spring to mind for attracting hummingbirds, but those with spring or summer blooms can satiate hummingbirds and add much-needed shade and dimension to your garden.
You want one with abundant flowers in hummer-favored hues, so if you live in USDA Hardiness Zones 6 to 9, the 'Twilight' crepe myrtle is perfect for attracting hummingbirds.
It features glossy green leaves and dark purple to light lavender blooms. This fast-growing tree can grow up to 25 feet high and 15 feet wide and live as long as two decades.
Hummingbirds gravitate towards the brightly colored flowers, and the tree's spindly twigs make excellent perches. These trees are drought-tolerant and resistant to many pests.
Choose a sunny location for healthy blooms. Soil type isn't crucial, but it must be well-draining. Use a slow-release fertilizer in winter or spring for abundant summer flowers.
