Planting Lavender In The Ground Vs. A Garden Container, And Which Is Best
By David Kuchta
With more than 45 known species of lavender and ten times as many varieties, the best method for planting can vary. The plant can thrive both in the ground and in containers.
Growing lavender in containers can be better if you have no outdoor space, have poor soil that doesn't drain well, or live outside of the preferred growing zones.
Containers can be a preferable place to grow lavender if you want to grow a year-round herb garden, as garden soil can contain substances that you wouldn't want to ingest.
The main benefit of growing lavender in the ground is that, under the right conditions, maintenance is minimal. It needs less water and won’t outgrow its container.
In the winter, in-ground plants need less protection than container plants because the ground stays warm below the root line, so long as you live in the appropriate hardiness zone.
