Raised Garden Bed Mistakes TikTok Warns Not To Make At All Costs
By KALEIGH BRILLON
Raised garden beds let you grow almost anything anywhere, and TikTok user @growinginthegarden outlined the most common mistakes to avoid to ensure your garden beds are successful.
Failing to plan your raised garden beds will cost you time and money. Before building them, you need to decide where to put them to get optimal sunshine and which plants to grow.
Learn from past mistakes — for example, if you previously ran out of room, plant fewer or smaller plants, or if it was too sunny or shady, use shade cloths or install a greenhouse.
Novice gardeners also often choose where to put their beds without planning how they’ll water them. If the beds won’t be near a water spigot, you’ll need to buy some long hoses.
Beds often fail due to poor or insufficient soil. Determine how much soil you need based on what you plant — for instance, shallow-rooted plants need less space than larger plants.

Buy bulk topsoil and compost from reputable suppliers and mix them. You can also fill the bottom of the beds with cardboard and leaves, which will decompose and nourish the soil.
Lastly, planting at the wrong time is the reason many plants fail. It’s important to find out the best time to plant each type of crop to give them the best opportunity to thrive.
