Safer Alternatives To Plastic Wrap That'll Save You Money
By Jason Rochlin
While plastic cling wrap can seal containers and reduce air exposure, it’s also a source of microplastics that can end up in your body. Luckily, there are safer alternatives.
One substitute you can consider is beeswax food wraps. Their wax is a natural preservative, and it can be reused for about a year if cleaned with cold water and mild soap.
You can make your own by melting beeswax pellets over a cut cotton cloth in your low-temp oven (around 200 degrees Fahrenheit for five minutes or so).
Then, spread the liquid wax over the cloth with a brush and let it hang out to dry. You can make your wraps with any fabric pattern, and they should be naturally biodegradable.
Another solution is glass containers and jars, which often include sealable lids to help keep things fresh. Glass holds many advantages over plastic, such as being reusable.
Scientists are also working on safer alternatives to plastic wrap that use plant-based materials, like starchy fibers, that can be sprayed onto food to help prevent spoiling.
