Should You Be Using Baking Soda On Your Floor?
By ROGER ADLER
Baking soda is an incredibly effective cleaning product that is used in many cleaning concoctions. It is an effective floor cleaner when used properly because it will remove stains and scuff marks, but it should not be used on marble or other natural stone floors.
Baking soda is detrimental to polyurethane and waxy floors and should only be used conservatively on wood floors to avoid damaging the surface or leaving a powdery white residue. Start by vacuuming or sweeping the area, then use a mop to apply a mix of vinegar and baking soda, rotating the mop as you go and rinsing the surface when finished.
Baking soda and vinegar can lift stains and grime while breaking down bacteria and dust mites, and it’s safe to use on linoleum, porcelain, vinyl, laminate, ceramic, and glazed-tile floors. Make a paste, leave it on your grout for several hours, scrub it with a soft brush, and mop — for best results, clean the grout first, then work on the entire floor.
