Squeaky Wood Floors Don't Stand A Chance Against This Household Staple
By WILL FORD
When wood expands and contracts with changes in temperature and humidity, floorboards rub together and create squeaking sounds. To eliminate them, use WD-40 or silicone spray.
Applying lubricants such as WD-40 or silicone spray to the affected areas allows the floorboards to glide smoothly against each other, reducing friction and eliminating squeaking.
First, clean the floorboards thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris that may be contributing to the sound. Then, shake the can of WD-40 well so the lubricant is properly mixed.
Spray a small amount of WD-40 directly onto the squeaky areas, ensuring not to overspray or saturate the wood. Then, wipe off any excess WD-40 with a clean cloth or paper towel.
Wiping off the lubricant prevents the floor from becoming slippery and reduces the risk of residue buildup. WD-40 costs about $10 for an 11-ounce can online or in stores.
Lubricating the creaking floorboards will resolve your squeaking issue temporarily, but you should consult a professional to determine what it really means when your floors squeak.
