Stunning Plants That'll Send Snakes Far Away From Your Yard
By DESIRÉE O
Allium
Allium produces not only stunning purple flowers but also sulfonic acid. Snakes hate the chemical, as well as the plant’s scent, and will be sure to stay far away.
Golden Barrel Cactus
It’s not a strong smell that helps this eye-catching, sun-loving cactus deter snakes, but rather its potentially painful spikes that could poke them.
Holly
Since holly grows as a shrub that is relatively low to the ground, snakes that try to pass by can be pricked by its pointy leaves — something they would rather avoid.
There are several types of holly, so finding one for your climate shouldn’t be hard. Keep in mind that, according to the Pet Poison Helpline, holly can be poisonous for pets.
Lavender
Despite the popularity of lavender's aroma with humans, it's believed that snakes dislike the scent and do their best to stay away from it.
Lavender also contains linalool, a toxic substance that may deter snakes but that's also toxic for pets, per the ASPCA. Most varieties of lavender do well in USDA zones 5 to 9.
Lemongrass
Lemongrass’ citrus scent, which comes from the presence of limonene in the plant, is what deters snakes. Be aware that lemongrass is also poisonous to pets.
