Suet, a type of beef fat, is an important treat for cardinals during winter, as it offers protein that keeps their bodies sufficiently warm during plummeting temperatures.
When adding suet, you still want a healthy variety in the feeder. Add it to a blend of safflower seeds, barkbutter, and cracked corn — all of which cardinals love.
Cardinals also enjoy berries, so you can get a nut and suet berry blend. You can also try SuperSuet, which uses even more ingredients, including mealworms, beef fat, and nuts.
