The 17 Best Evergreen Shrubs For Year-Round Landscaping
By KIMBERLY SMITH
Boxwood
Boxwood shrubs range from 2 to 8 feet tall and maintain a nice shape without much pruning, so they're great if you don't want to devote a lot of time to your shrubs.
These plants bloom in the early spring and thrive in USDA zones 5 to 9, depending on the variety. They grow in full sun or partly shady areas and moist, airy soil.
Holly
Holly bushes are associated with winter, but they stay lovely year-round. The best time to plant holly bushes is in spring or autumn, and they require little maintenance.
The bushes bloom in the spring and summer and thrive in USDA zones 6 to 10. They need partial shade to full sun with loamy, acidic soil and grow up to 10 feet tall and 5 feet wide.
Laurustinus
These bushy plants have colorful, fragrant clusters of tiny white blooms that reveal bright blue berries. They grow easily and don't require a lot of pruning.
Laurustinus blooms in winter and early spring and thrives in USDA zones 8 to 10. They require full sun or partial shade and moist, well-draining soil.
Mountain Laurel
Mountain Laurel can be challenging to care for and grows slowly, so buy a nice-sized shrub from a nursery. Also, remember that all parts of these plants are toxic.
These shrubs bloom in the spring and thrive in USDA zones 5 to 9. They require shade and acidic soil and grow 3 to 15 feet tall. They should only be pruned lightly.
Yucca
Yucca shrubs have long, stiff, pointed leaves and bloom white, bell-shaped flowers from a stalk from the center of the plant. They can sustain drought conditions.
Yuccas bloom in summer and early autumn and thrive in USDA zones 3 to 10. They need full sun with dry, well-draining soil and can grow up to 30 feet tall.
