The Aluminum Foil Hack That’ll Revive Your Rusty Outdoor Furniture
By SAKSHI KHAITAN
When the oxygen and moisture in the air react with the metal in your furniture, it can cause your outdoor furniture to become rusty. To get rid of this rust, use aluminum foil.
Rubbing aluminum foil on iron oxide (or rust) generates heat and triggers a chemical reaction that causes iron to lose oxygen while aluminum gains it, breaking down the rust.
First, wipe your furniture clean with a microfiber cloth dipped in a soapy mixture of a few drops of dish soap mixed into a bucket of water. This will make spotting the rust easier.
Next, crumple a piece of aluminum foil into a ball and gently rub it onto the affected areas. Dip the ball into a salt and water solution to increase its efficacy.
Alternatively, you can combine white vinegar and water in a 1:1 ratio and spray this solution over the rusted parts or dip the foil in it before you rub the rust off with the ball.
Rub the rusted patches a few times to uncover the shiny surface underneath before using a microfiber cloth to dry it. Apply a coat of paint or varnish for added protection.
